Teaching Virginia History Panel Discussion| 2011 Virginia Forum:

We are seeking professors experienced in teaching Virginia history (and scholars knowledgeable in Virginian history) to participate in a panel discussion on teaching Virginia history (college-level) for the 2011 Virginia Forum. We hope the panel discussion will assist college professors in developing new courses on Virginia history and promote the teaching of Virginia history more generally. The 2011 Forum will be co-hosted by the Virginia Military Institute and Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Virginia and held March 25-26, 2011.

 Suggested questions and topics for the roundtable to address include:
What is the state of the field?
What topics need greater emphasis?
Where should one begin in developing a course?
What are some suggestions on organizing and structuring a course on VA history (i.e., major themes, chronologies, periodization, etc.) ?
What are the key titles, databases, sites, and other resources available?
What are the new technologies and/or approaches professors and teachers can integrate into their classrooms?
What have been your challenges and successes in teaching VA history?

Of particular interest will be those who can speak to better integrating African American, Native American, and women's/gender history into the Virginian narrative.


Please submit a brief proposal (roughly 500 words) describing what you wish to present (topics/time periods, etc.) and your experience in teaching VA history by September 10, 2010.  E-mail submission preferred.
