Wearing my ASV hat, here's a shameless plug for a good read.

Archival research can be fun!

The Archeological Society of Virginia Press is publishing a new edition
of the Archives Survival Guide, publication #37, by Ned Heite. This
slim book takes a light-hearted approach to explaining the
intricacies of working with archival material. In particular, it
explains the sometimes-confusing processes that created archival
materials over the centuries, and describes techniques for extracting
maximum benefit from their use. Originally published as an article in
the ASV bulletin many years ago, the survival guide now is available as
a handy guidebook, as well as an entertaining read. All proceeds go to
the benefit of ASV.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Ned Heite, RPA, MA, was formerly head of the
Delaware archives and of the state historic preservation program. In
Virginia, he was managing editor of Virginia Cavalcade magazine and set
up the first statewide historical archaeology survey. His research
projects include the restoration of the Delaware State House. Since
1980, he has been proprietor of Heite Consulting, a cultural resource
management firm in Camden, Delaware. The firm is celebrating 25 years
in business during 2005.
