Hi Eric,

There are ads for meetings of the Jr. O.U.A.M. in the Richmond Daily Dispatch in the early/mid 1850s. If you need the exact reference let me know and I will check the research notes from my book.

Best,

Ami

Subject: [VA-HIST] J.O.U.A.M. (R.E. Lee Council No. 11 - Richmond, VA) question.

Does anyone know when the Jr. O. U. A. M. (Junior Order United American Mechanics) started in Richmond (suspect around 1881 or so) and when the R.E. Lee Council No. 11 which was last located at 322 N 25 th Street (now the Church Hill Animal Hospital building) disbanded in Richmond?   And the last J.O.U.A.M. council in Richmond?

I know that there was a store on the first floor called Chandler’s which was a men’s clothing store that opened up when the building was finished in 1909 and closed in 1965. The founder of the store (James Cromwell Chandler) was at one time the councilor and his son who took over the business (Oliver Allen Chandler) was a trustee.

Thanks!

Eric
