Thanx. The Library wasn't singled out. Virtually every state budget item was
cut between 7 and 15 percent, some more. And by this time in the fiasco
resulting from the car tax repeal of four years ago, there wasn't anything
left to kill.
Just about wiped out our publications program, though. If there are some
dollars that have dropped out on the floor somewhere we hope to keep our
exhibitions program going, if we can find donors to pay the printing bills
we hope to publish a couple of books that are almost through the editorial
process, and if we can get by without one of the editors (John Kneebone, who
is out) and one of the assistant editors (Mari Julienne, who is also out),
we hope to keep the DVB going, pending next year's assembly session.

Your private .02 means a great deal to those of us who know, like, admire,
and respect you, and to those of us who have used the LofV. It is too bad
that the governor of Va. has so little respect for the institutions that
made the state an important and great one. It is one more indication of the
failure of public officials to understand that culture and history are
central to the creation of a truly great socity and nation.
