On the question of mortality in early Virginia, don't neglect the seminal
article by Carville Earle, "Environment, Disease, and Mortality in Early
Virginia," in Thad Tate and David Ammerman, eds., The Chesapeake in the
Seventeenth Century (1979), 96-125; or Irene W. G. Hecht's dissertation
(University of Washington, 1969), "The Virginia Colony, 1607-1640: A Study
in Frontier Growth."
