Many Virginians now rest at Oak Hill Cemetery in Georgetown, D.C. A few of
these Virginians, as identified on their monument inscription, are Rev.
William Corrie Lipscomb of King William Co. (1792-1879); the Tracy family
of Fauquier and Fairfax cos.; L.B.P. Page Saunders of Rosewell in
Gloucester Co. (1808-1885); Mary King (1801-1877), John Withers
(1776-1861), and Rev. Henderson Suter (d. 1895) of Alexandria; Walter
Alexander (d. 1847) and his wife Catharine (d. 1854), of Alexandria Co.;
Edward R. Ford (1813-1871), Lewis Mattingly (1791-1856), and Dr. James S.
Gunnell (d. 1852) of Fairfax Co.; George Corbin Washington (1789-1854) of
Westmoreland Co.; John E. Norris (1816-1887) of Loudoun Co.; Benjamin
Goodloe Tompkins (d. 1847) of Mathews Co.; Abel Upshur (d. 1853) of
Northampton Co.; Rev. George W. Mitchell of Roanoke Co. (1811-1881),
Charles C. Cameron of Shepherdstown (1789-1865); and Robert Beale of
Portsmouth (1800-1866).

Virginia researchers should join in to celebrate with us that the cemetery
tombstone inscriptions, excerpts of the minutes of the Board of Managers,
and burial data about unmarked burials have been preserved and made
available for sharing. Accordingly, the Oak Hill Cemetery Company is
pleased to announce the release of its
first book, by Wesley E. Pippenger, "Oak Hill Cemetery, Georgetown, D.C.:
Monument Inscriptions and Burial Data." The book and author will be
featured at a Gala
Celebration at the Cemetery on Sunday, November 19th, 2006 (rain or shine),
from 1 to 4 p.m., in the 1850 chapel by Renwick.

All are invited to come meet the author and purchase their own copy of the
first edition of this 2-volume work that is limited to 200 copies. The
book is cloth-bound, is generously illustrated with photographs, maps and
diagrams, and contains verbatim inscriptions on all monuments as well as
data for unmarked graves, totaling 20,747 burials. Also included are
appendices that cover a detailed chronology of historical events throughout
the life of the cemetery grounds, statistical analysis by cemetery section
of marked and unmarked burials, a listing of cemetery officers, sample
cemetery records, and more!

For those not able to attend the festivities, copies may be ordered from
the cemetery office for $150/set, postpaid, by sending a check payable to
the Oak Hill Cemetery Preservation Foundation, to the cemetery office: The
Oak Hill Cemetery Company, 3001 R St., N.W., Washington, DC 20007-2923. No
charge cards can be accepted. Inquires may be made at the cemetery office
at 202-337-2835.
