If the biography says, "Samuel Pottenger fought with the KY Militia in the
Indian Wars" and doesn't actually say the French and Indian War, it may
refer to the U.S. government's war with the Indians in the Northwest
Territory in the late 1780s and early 1790s. Kentucky militia fought in
that war. For a brief summary of the war, see:

 <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Northwest_Indian_War>
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Northwest_Indian_War

The National Archives has muster rolls of regular army and volunteer
organizations that fought in that war. See

http://www.archives.gov/research/guide-fed-records/groups/094.html

(Scroll down to 94.2.2)

There also was a Samuel Pottinger from Maryland who was in Kentucky during
the Revolution as part of Captain James Harrod's company. They fought
Indians, so perhaps that's what the biography means.

Good luck!
