I attended a Life Long Leaning course at James Madison University that was lead by a gentleman that did this
(formal edit process) for a living.
It appeared to me from what he discussed that the process was a legitimate one for book publishers to require.
The methods that he used, the editing standards observed, and required were more than worth a couple of 100 bucks
to turn out a properly "finished" product for commercial distribution.
If you have doubts, I recommend that you contact LLI at James Madison University and try to contact this fellow (I
forgot his name) and get a second opinion about the "validity" of the requirement -- with all do respect to the
fact that he is in the business -- as an independent editor.
It was my opinion that he knew what he was talking about; and, that the "process" was very much needed for the
"likes" of us -- (scribblers).

As some know, I have recently had a children's book published and am sitting
on cloud nine. I answered an ad for writers of children's books: "WL
Children's Agency". So far, they are telling me that I am a go on a story I
wrote about Pocahontas

Today's email from WL Children's Agency says that the story has merit and
they are asking me to have a "formal edit process" performed. They say they
will provide referrals to have it done, and it will cost me $70-90.
I can submit a professional edit (that follows their model) from any
professional editor of my choosing. Or I can ask them to make a referral for
this service.
My question is whether this is a typical way of doing business? Or is this
indication that it is something I should not get involved in. Does anyone
know if other writer agents require a "professional edit process" to
represent a writer? Also, can anyone suggest such an editor closer to home
and with knowledge of the subject of the story?
