Thanks, Paul.  I have always thought the figure too high, I mean the general
population figures for that period would not seem to support such a number,
but I was given that by a fairly prominent African-American scholar who
shall remain nameless in this instance.  Until now I have just deferred to
what I saw as his superior knowledge on the subject.
