DEAR ALL,
I'LL SAY THIS: MY YARDMAN IS FROM CHASE CITY IN MECKLENBERG COUNTY, VIRGINIA
AND HIS LAST NAME IS THE SAME AS SOME OF MY MECKLENBERG COUNTY ANCESTORS WHO
WERE ROAMING AROUND THAT PART OF SOUTH CENTRAL VIRGINIA AT THE SAME TIME AS
HIS ANCESTORS.......AND ALTHOUGH I AM AS WASPY AS THE NEXT PERSON, I AM
PROUD TO CLAIM MR. MAJOR PURYEAR AS MY COUSIN! NOT ONLY THAT, BUT HE AND
HIS WONDERFUL WIFE, BETTY, ARE MY TWO BEST FRIENDS!
SO, MR FINKELMAN, IF YOU THOUGHT YOU WERE GOING TO STIR UP SOME SORT OF A
RACIST HORNET'S NEST WITH YOUR SUPPOSEDLY INFLAMMATORY COMMENTS, YOU CAN
FORGET IT!
I AM PROUD AND HONORED TO BE RELATED TO MY AFRICAN-AMERICAN COUSINS!
I AM HONORED THAT THEY WOULD DEEM ACCEPTING ME INTO THEIR LOVELY FAMILY.
SIGNED:
DEANE FERGUSON MILLS
13TH GENERATION VIRGINIAN THROUGH THE PURYEARS AND THE FARRARS AND, YES, THE
JEFFERSONS.

based on a misconception, thus the conclusion is a bit silly. From the
get-go the majority of Virginians and other southern white men did NOT own
slaves. This didn't mean they were less biased than TJ and the other
politicians, but it did mean opportunities were not the same. Perhaps we
sometimes forget that "history" is about more than what happened to VIPs
like TJ and the other rich and famous.
