In researching my book "The Hairstons" I found at LVA the transcripts of
the trial in Henry County of the Hairston slave Sam Lion, who was
condemned to hang for killing an overseer, even though the testimony of a
white man indicated plainly that Sam Lion was acting in self-defense.  The
overseer was about to kill him in a fit of rage.
