The Program Committee for the Fall 2015 MARAC meeting in Roanoke, VA, is seeking speakers for the following proposed sessions. If interested in participating, please contact the committee member in charge of the session for details.

Tapes Don't Die, They Just Fade Away: History and Handling of Magnetic Tape Formats (Harrison Behl, [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>)
Historical information on the development of magnetic tape formats, along with hands-on demonstrations. Seeking 1-2 speakers.

Ask a SysAdmin: Digital Archives from the IT Perspective (Harrison Behl, [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>)
Conference attendees will have the opportunity to ask questions of a panel of IT administrators, who will share their perspective on preservation and access at archival institutions. Seeking 1-2 speakers.

Try It, You'll Like It: A Hands-On Crowd-sourcing Q & A (Helen Schubert Fields, [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>)
Attendees will have the opportunity to try their hand at a variety of crowd-sourced projects and ask questions of the project staff. Seeking at least one additional speaker/project.

Preserving Born-Digital Records upon Employee Departure (Alston Cobourn, [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>)
So a faculty member or other employee is leaving your organization. You have tried and true strategies for dealing with their paper records. But how should you approach the daunting task of collecting, managing, and preserving their electronic records? How can you talk with your IT about this need and why you need their support? Attendees will learn about open source software options and digital preservation strategies that can be implemented by archivists on a shoestring budget and lacking staff. Seeking 1-2 speakers.

Minimal Processing and Preservation: Friends or Foes? (Dyani Feige, [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>)
Are "minimal processing" and "preservation" mutually exclusive? Can conscientious archivists make large collections and/or processing backlogs accessible more quickly without sacrificing the protection and ultimate longevity of the materials? Seeking 1 additional speaker.

Marketing Our Archives to the Next Generation of Donors and Researchers (Jen Eidson, [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>)
Ways to increase buy-in or successfully market to the next generation of archives users or donors in university archives and Special Collections. Seeking 2 speakers.

Indexing the Records of Free and Enslaved African Americans through 1865 (Cara Griggs, [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>)
This session will focus on projects to index references to African Americans in collections and to digitize the related records. Presenters will discuss the histories of their projects and problems they have encountered along the way. Unknown No Longer from the Virginia Historical Society (http://unknownnolonger.vahistorical.org/) and a related online indexing project from the Library of Virginia are currently participating. Seeking 1 additional speaker/project and a session moderator.

The Electronic Enigma: Digital Accessions and Donor Relations (Chris Hartten, [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>)
How do institutions craft digital acquisitions policies that effectively satisfy privacy concerns of donors? What sort of tactics have proven useful while negotiating agreements for electronic materials? How do we address sensitive issues such as email accounts, passwords, and forensic imaging? Seeking 2 speakers for brief (10 min.) talks. Open forum to follow.

The Interactive Experience: Exploring Technologies for Creating Touchscreen Exhibits (Carolyn Parsons, [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>)
Increasingly, libraries and archives are using interactive touchscreen technologies to provide users with new ways to explore and interact with digital collections. The panel will share their experiences in creating and managing interactive exhibits - describing tools, open-source products, implementation strategies and assessment. Seeking 1 additional speaker.

From Creation to Donation: How Archivists Empower Hidden Communities (Samantha Winn, [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>)
Exploring the relationship archivists have with historical records of marginalized communities between the point of creation and the point of preservation/donation. Panelists might discuss strategies for outreach/advocacy and how we can develop relationships with records creators before they become donors. Seeking 1 additional speaker.

In addition to the above sessions, we are also soliciting student papers for a session. Students can send their papers to Christy Fic ([log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>) for consideration.

Best,

Liz Caringola & Jessica Johnson
