Eloquent but I can't resist the urge to complicate the issue even further.  Probably more than we'd like to acknowledge, whites were dealing more gingerly and thoughtfully with their 'black families' because they were biologically kin.  This was another reality that colored master-slave relations, over which much ink has already been spilled.
