This case involves principles in an imptortant iron works in the
Shenandoah Valley of Virginia, an iron works that is the subject of an
extraordinarily fine book on industrial slavery, Charles B. Dew, Bond of
Iron: Master and Slave at Buffalo Forge (New York, 1994).

Often it takes tenacity and curiosity to recognize records that have
special historical value.  An eagle-eyed archivist processing hundreds
of dusty volumes removed from the Augusta County courthouse basement
identified a seemingly mundane ledger that provides insight into
industrial slavery in antebellum Virginia. See her discovery in this
