The Library of Virginia is pleased to host the panel discussion "John Mitchell, Jr.: The Life and Legacy of Richmond's 'Race Man' " on Wednesday, February 19, 2014, from 7:00 to 8:30 pm. This program, part of the Strong Men & Women in Virginia History project (www.lva.virginia.gov/smw), is free and open to the public. It is underwritten by a generous gift from Dominion. Come early to see rare editions of the Planet and other unique materials related to Mitchell's life and legacy. A reception follows the program.

John Mitchell, Jr. edited the trailblazing newspaper the Richmond Planet from 1884 until his death in 1929, fighting racism and advocating for African Americans' rights during the Jim Crow era. Mitchell also contributed to the growth and development of Richmond's Black community as a banker and fraternal order leader.

WTVR's Greg McQuade is joined by biographer Ann Field Alexander, historian Roice Luke, and Brenda Andrews, publisher of Norfolk's New Journal and Guide, in a freewheeling discussion of the challenges Mitchell fought to overcome and his legacy in the African American publishing world today.

For a little background, see Mr. McQuade's Emmy winning feature on Mitchell: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2sx1dDigXjo

I look forward to seeing you next Wednesday!

Gregg
