How about this Mr. Basil:
Europeans that came here were landless peasants, and for the most part expendable. With the land of the Natives and the labor of slaves, the landless peasants gained wealth and stature. There weren't too many Europeans heading back to Europe after the Revolutionary War, nor after the Civil War. 

In other words, right back at you!!
