Lyle,

You might be seeing things a little too melodramatic. I don't get the impression thousands of men died along the road. Where did you come up with that notion? For God's sake, if they had survived this long, the way home was a walk in the park.

P.S. What was the name of that book about the CSA soldier who deserted in North Carolina? Now that was a hard-scrabble story.
