The Restoration playwright Aphra Behn wrote a play set during Bacon's
Rebellion. It's called The Widdow Ranter, or The History of Bacon in
Virginia, and was performed posthumously (with an epilogue by John
Dryden) in 1689.

Fascinating! I hadn't realized that.

Provisionally, Defoe's novel should definitely get the prize for
earliest work of fiction set in Virginia--and one of the prizes for most
distinguished author.
