Anne, I understand now that you don't really know who said what here; you are simply repeating what Jon Kukla stated in his book, that you quote as "TJ was referring to sexual relief outside of marriage and stated that he had found a perfect solution" -- and Kukla apparently didn't reveal that TJ's Literary Commonplace Book was a collection of excerpts from other author's literary work collected when TJ was only 15 years old and before his marriage.

And, ok, you say your 'pimping' bit is only your conjecture, so without references.

So, it seems you really don't personally have much to offer here except your conjecture and opinion. Too bad that you don't even have a page number from TJ's collection so anyone can readily validate your claim at the Library of Congress web site.

I didn't "insist" on anything in my posting, Anne, I don't understand why you said that I did. You seem so sensitive to your group's 'group-thinking' position.

And, listers (including even some who are posting negatively about TJ) should understand that most of this TJ-SH bantering at the VA-HIST and VA-ROOTS mailing lists is not simply about differing opinions concerning history, it pertains to politically liberal if not leftist intentions to 'take down' Thomas Jefferson along with his governmental beliefs. Here is what appears in the Wall Street Journal:

"Jefferson's damaged reputation may have less to do with Sally Hemings than
with a cultural struggle taking place in contemporary academia. As Joseph
Ellis -- historian, Pulitzer Prize winner and the point man among senior
scholars in the assault on Jefferson -- explained last year in the William &
Mary Quarterly, Jefferson is "the dead-white-male who matters most," and the
"most valued trophy in the cultural wars.""

Re: http://www.opinionjournal.com/extra/?id=95000747

Lowell Ponte states, "In our history, Jefferson has been the patron political saint for those who believe in small government, decentralized power, low taxes, and individual liberty. Thomas Jefferson, in other words, is the icon of everything today's Socialist-Marxist Left wants to destroy. They are delighted to minimize and demonize him."

Now these may be strong words for VA-HIST/ROOTS but listers get the gist I'm sure, at least enough to instigate further research -- there are many online sources readily available.

Thanks,
Neil McDonald
