Mary: Hi. Please contact the Special Collections Library at Colonial Williamsburg. They Should have several books and resources on Virginians who were leaving the state and were interested in pursuing this type of thing. Also, many of these people who did this were of French and French Canadian descent and maried women from the many American Indian nations that they traded with and met on their travels.

The ladies that they married were wise in business matters and helped to broker successful fur trades. The Special Collections room at the College of William and Mary also will be of assistance as well. And please consider searching sites about the fur trade from the late 17th Century to the end of the late 18th Century as well. The "long" 18th Century from 1650 to 1805 covers a lot I know but will yield many fruitful sources. Jane STeele.
