Kudos to the Rockefeller Library at Colonial Williamsburg for on-line
access to the Virginia Gazette index AND digitized images of the pages
indexed. Check it out at

http://research.history.org/JDRLibrary.cfm

I don't know whether it presents the complete Cappon & Duff VG index
through 1779 - and I don't know how long its been available. But its got
lots of boats etc. The Gazette pages download as Bitmap files, which are
huge, so after downloading them as bmp files I find it convenient to open
them in MSPaint (or similar program) and save them as smaller JPG or TIF
files from which I can then print the part of the page I need.
