I am not sure about the "copyright" thing about posting on the Internet. Doesn't make sense because you have to register with the copyright office to make it binding under intellectual properties. But yes, watermark your pictures if need be.
To me the philosophy of being closed fisted with research is like two people unrelated being stranded in a car in the middle of the desert. One of them has two bottles of water and the other none. It would be like telling the other person they are out of luck because you paid for both bottles and they are not related to you. That is where ethics and morals come into play.

Yes, theft from websites is common practice from companies that have no morals. According to the copyright law, the minute you create your website, your material is copyrighted. It would be great to see these companies get sued for breach of copyright law, but they know that most of us don't have the money to hire a lawyer and go through the entire process.
You might want to consider placing a large watermark over your image online that would discourage those companies or others from wanting to use your material.
Genealogy is very important and credit should be given to those who take the time and money to do the intense research necessary to find the material.
