I have been asked to post this call for papers at what looks to be a very
interesting conference.

CALL FOR PAPERS

Colonial National Historical Park and the Jamestown-Yorktown
Foundation invite proposals for papers to be presented at a conference
focusing on military leadership during the Virginia Campaign of 1781, which
culminated in the siege of Yorktown. The conference will be held January
11-13, 2002 at the Yorktown Victory Center, a museum of the American
Revolution at Yorktown, Virginia. The conference will bring together
historians who are studying the importance of military leadership during the
Revolution and provide a forum where they can interact with each other,
museum, and historic site staff to explore new interpretations and research
opportunities. The organizers welcome proposals that examine a range of
topics including (but not restricted to): reassessing the Clinton-Cornwallis
controversy, the impact that encountering foreign officers had on American
military leaders, the problems of coordinating militia units with the
Continental line, Jefferson's and Von Steuben's problems in exercising
effective leadership in Virginia in the Spring of 1781, and case studies of
examples of leadership among lower grade officers.

Historians at all levels are encouraged to submit proposals
including faculty, graduate students, humanities professionals, museum or
public historians, and independent scholars. A number of small stipends
will be available to help defray travel and lodging costs. Proposals for
papers (title, one page abstract and resume) should be sent to: Leadership
Symposium, c/o Colonial National Historical Park, P.O. Box 210, Yorktown, VA
23690, or as an attached word document via e-mail to [log in to unmask] before
October 15, 2001. For more information contact Diane Depew at (757)
898-2412, or via e-mail at the same address.
