Nobody regrets the demise of Virginia Cavalcade magazine more deeply or
misses it more often than those of us at the Library of Virginia who
worked with its staff and occasionally wrote for it.

Anybody, anywhere, is free to begin a popular illustrated magazine of
Virginia history and culture as a successor to that excellent
periodical, but as a tribute of respect to that venerable publication,
please do not give a new periodical the same title as the old one. That
would merely confuse new readers of Virginia history not familiar with
the original magazine and would also stand in the way of any future
revival that the Library of Virginia may sponsor.

That said, Please:

Do not speak for the Library of Virginia or attempt to explain its
policies. Only authorized members of the Library of Virginia staff have
access to the necessary information about budgets, policies, and
politics.

Do not lobby legislators about policies relating to the Library of
Virginia without previously coordinating the effort with responsible
members of the Library of Virginia's administration. Crossed messages
and uncoordinated efforts almost always do more damage than good, and
the fact is, nobody outside the Library knows what the staff is
planning, and even the planners are not yet in a position to know for
certain what is to be done.

Do not be intemperate or accusatory with anybody when discussing the
Library of Virginia and its present and past and future programs.
There's an old saying about flies and honey that we should keep in mind.

Please.
