The Library of Virginia is pleased to announce the addition of Surry County to the cohabitation register digitization project<http://digitool1.lva.lib.va.us:8881/R/BYUYKLBA2BNPPNG4QY9929KPN4GB6R8Y8X65UEAFFJIUVEMSNS-03100?func=collections-result&collection_id=1522&pds_handle=GUEST>. This project, via the Virginia Memory<http://www.virginiamemory.com/> website, aims to index, digitize, transcribe, and provide access to all known Virginia cohabitation registers and the related registers of children whose parents had ceased to cohabit. Cohabitation registers are among the most important genealogical resources for African Americans attempting to connect their family lines back through the oftentimes murky past to their enslaved ancestors. For more on the Surry County register, including a list of delightful names found in the document, check out today's Out of the Box blog post.
