List member/West Virginia author pens book on remarkable frontier women

They were courageous and resourceful pioneers.
They made arduous journeys, carved careers out of the wilderness, defied
conventions, and fought for their freedom. They were community leaders,
artists, and entrepreneurs.
The 14 women profiled in Outrageous Women of the American Frontier,
published by John Wiley & Sons and written by Mary Rodd Furbee, boldly faced
the gritty realities of daily life everything from starvation to shootouts,
and made their mark in history.
Among the women featured are stagecoach driver Charlotte "Charlie"
Parkhurst, stagecoach driver; Sacagawea, the Native American woman who
guided Lewis and Clark through the Pacific Northwest, and Libbie Custer,
wife of the famous general and a talented writer who chronicled her frontier
adventures in books that made her a wealthy woman; and Nellie Cashman, who
ran hotels and restaurants from Arizona and Montana to Alaska.
Furbee, a half-time instructor at WVU School of Journalism, is also the
author of Outrageous Women of Colonial America; Anne Bailey, Frontier Scout;
Shawnee Captive: The Story of Mary Ingles; and Women of the American
Revolution. In 2002, she'll be a featured author at the West Virginia and
Ohio River book festivals, and visits schools throughout United States. The
Wiley books are available at any bookstore or by calling 1-800-225-5945.
Information on all titles can is on Furbee's website (mfurbee.com).
