Can anyone interpret the structure symbols shown for buildings that are published in the 1878 OW Gray & Son atlas of towns/cities in VA. One symbol is a filled in polygon and the other is a polygon with a hatched interior. 
My first thought is that the filled in version represents masonry structures while the hatched represents frame. However, 1st person accounts from a few of the towns from the same decade (1870s) indicates that this is not the case. Another thought is that one represented occupied while the other represented vacant, but that doesn't fit either.
I've searched for the formal key that should have accompanied the atlas but have not been able to find it online.
