If you download and read the whole patent, it tells you what was used in
payment--headright, military right or money.

The 1723 patent for Charles Evans (Patent Book 11, p. 199) was purchased
for four pounds; the 1747 purchase in Brunswick (PB 28, p.135) for 15
shillings, the 1751 purchase of 38 acres in Lunenburg (PB 31, p. 337)
was purchased for 5 shillings. Headrights were infrequently used during
this period; the later imposition of the pistole fee brought them back
into favor for a brief time.
