I'm certain the historians on the list will have much more to offer, but in case they are home for the weekend, thought I'd tell you what little I know, which does not include what the word "Powhatan" might mean.

  Do know it was the name of a native group that may have been encountered first by the Spanish  (ca. 1561) on the James River.  Later, they figure prominently in the settlement at Jamestown.

  Dawns on me that you probably already know this,  as it  was the tribe of Pocahontas. . . .
