A letterbook in our collection details the misadventures of Martin Duralde, a 
grandson of Henry Clay, as he traveled a circuit of western Virginia's springs in 
1846.  Suffering from tuberculosis, Duralde genuinely sought the springs' 
healing powers.  His letters and sketches reveal he also sought a quick buck,  
with the help of some unsavory associates. See the latest entry from the
