3)  Executive Director, York County Heritage Trust (Pennsylvania, U.S.)

York County Heritage Trust of York, Pennsylvania seeks a dynamic and experienced President/CEO to lead a growing historical institution dedicated to becoming the benchmark organization, both regionally and nationally, for the preservation and presentation of local history in a variety of formats and venues.

 The Organization

York County Heritage Trust is an educational institution that uses its collections, historic sites, and documentary resources to inspire people to explore the history and culture of York County Pennsylvania.

The Trust was founded in 1999 after a merger of the Historical Society of York County (HSYC) and the Agricultural and Industrial Museum of York County (AIM). HSYC began in 1895 with a group of interested citizens who subsequently developed a library to serve as a repository for the County's genealogical resource material. By 1900 a museum was opened. HSYC acquired the Golden Plough Tavern, the General Gates House, the Barnett Bobb Log House, the Fire Museum and the Bonham House from 1966-1985. AIM opened in 1991 and acquired an industrial complex of six buildings in 1992. Today, the Trust maintains eight sites that preserve and present 300 years of York County's rich and diverse history. This fall, Doris Kearns Goodwin will speak at a fundraiser for the Trust's Leader Education Endowment named in honor of former Pennsylvania Gov. George Leader, a York native, and the Leader family.

With an annual operating budget of just over $1 million and an endowment of $6.8 million, an active board of directors of 32 members and a staff of nineteen (twelve full-time and seven part-time) support the Trust's core values. Income comes from contributions, the local Cultural Alliance, events, membership, sales and rentals, fees and services, and endowment income. Policy and program decisions are based on the following beliefs:

 * History has the power to inspire the present and shape the future.
 * Local heritage is multi-dimensional and multi-cultural.
 * Information on the history of the region shall be available and accessible to everyone.
 * Education is an ongoing, life-long process; Trust programs shall be challenging, fun and appropriate to different ages, learning styles and developmental needs.
 * Educational and informational programs encourage careers in history, industry, agriculture and other fields that are rooted in the heritage of the York County community.
 * Material culture, presented through interpretive museum exhibitions and interactive educational programs, is a powerful tool for creating an understanding of the local past.
 * Development, documentation and management of material culture collections are systematic, ongoing processes that strive to meet the highest professional standards.
 * Active community involvement in the preservation and presentation of its heritage is an integral part of all Trust activities; such involvement complements and enhances the efforts of a professional staff.

A capital campaign is anticipated in the near future. The Trust sponsors exhibitions and special events throughout the year. In addition to the museums, historical sites, collections and archives, it operates extensive educational programming and three museum shops and manages the York Murals. There were 32,000 visitors in 2006.

 Priorities

 * Increasing visibility, visitation and membership
 * Fundraising and grant acquisition to undertake new projects, build the endowment and maintain positive operating results
 * Developing the education programs and increasing access to children, schools, educational organizations and teachers
 * Broadening public interface - widening the geographical base and diversity of the audience
 * Managing the collection: Security, preservation and conservation as well as exhibition and interpretation
 * Managing the facilities: expansion and renovation along with ongoing annual maintenance
 * Recruiting, training and utilizing volunteers, board members and staff
