Dear VA-Hist subscribers,

Please join us this Friday, April 21, at noon, for a book talk by David
L. Holmes at the Library of Virginia. Dr. Holmes will discuss his new
book, The Faiths of the Founding Fathers, published by the Oxford
University Press in 2006. The spiritual beliefs of the Founding Fathers
has been a topic of considerable debate in recent years. As one
reviewer of Holmes's work ably notes, "one of the many excellent
features of the book is that it gives neither aid nor comfort to either
side in the modern culture wars. Holmes rejects simplistic views that
America was created as an explicitly 'Christian Nation,' while at the
same time challenging those who imagine the Founders as rigid
secularists. Instead of polemic, Holmes gives us an admirably balanced
and scholarly portrait of a very diverse spiritual landscape."

David L. Holmes is Walter G. Mason Professor of Religious Studies at the
College of William and Mary. He is the author of A Brief History of the
Episcopal Church, A Nation Mourns, and other books, as well as numerous
articles.

Dr. Holmes's talk will be followed by a book signing sponsored by the
Virginia Shop, where copies of the book are now available.

Our noontime book-talk series will continue in May with two
presentations on Jamestown. Historian James Horn of Colonial
Williamsburg will speak on his book, A Land As God Made It: Jamestown
And The Birth Of America, on May 11, and archaeologist Ivor Noel-Hume
will present his new Jamestown novel, Civilized Men: A James Towne
Tragedy, on May 18.
