RELIC PROGRAMS

Here are our latest offerings.  Funding for RELIC programs is provided
by the Friends of Central and Bull Run Libraries.  Sign language
interpretation is available for Prince William Public Library programs
if requested at least three weeks in advance.  To be notified of

DISCOVERING MANASSAS HISTORY

Presented by Rita G. Koman

Manassas author Rita G. Koman is a retired history teacher.  She has
taught generations of local students the fundamentals of good research
techniques and the value of original sources.  Her talents were put to
use in the preparation of her new book Manassas Mosaic: Creating a
Community, published by the Manassas Museum.  

Ms. Koman, a member of the Manassas Historic Resources Board, will
present a talk on Thursday, August 12, at 11 a.m., on "Discovering
Manassas History."   She will describe her experiences working on the
book and some of the interesting stories and documents she uncovered
while compiling it.   The history of this area goes back at least 300
years, and concerns much more than the famous battles that are most
often remembered.

HISTORY IN 3-D

Presented by Roxana Adams

Learning about history can begin with a single artifact.  Roxana Adams,
curator of the Manassas Museum, will show how to understand the larger
picture of an era by studying individual objects from that time.  Her
program, "History in 3-D," will give the audience an opportunity to see
some interesting relics and learn about their use and significance.   It
will be presented on Tuesday, August 24, at 7 p.m. at the Bull Run
Regional Library.

GENEALOGY 101

Presented by RELIC's Beverly Veness

Family history buffs have an opportunity to learn about methods,
strategies and resources for tracing their roots at a free session
sponsored by The Ruth E. Lloyd Information Center (RELIC).  The
hour-long program, conducted by Beverly Veness of the RELIC staff, is
scheduled for Thursday, September 9, at 11 a.m.   This program,
"Genealogy 101," will highlight the numerous free genealogical resources
available at RELIC and will explore basic techniques for tracking
ancestors.

SIXTH ANNUAL RELIC AFTER DARK

Featuring Drew Smith

            The Sixth Annual RELIC After Dark is scheduled for Saturday,
September 25, from 7 to 11 p.m. at Bull Run Regional Library.  Along
with an evening of dining and research opportunities, we can look
forward to another nationally known speaker.  Drew Smith, author of
"Social Networking for Genealogists," is our scheduled speaker.  He is
co-host of "The Genealogy Guys" podcast along with fellow genealogist
George Morgan.  Mr. Smith is an IT Librarian at the University of South
Florida in Tampa .   RELIC staff will be on hand to assist with our
resources.  Reservations are now being accepted for this gala event.
The cost which includes food and beverages, and printing from the
library's electronic resources, is $25 (paid in advance, cash or check).

GENEALOGY 201:  BEYOND THE BASICS

Presented by RELIC's Tish Como

            

Genealogy 101 introduced basic resources and techniques for researching
your family's history.   Genealogy 201 presents alternate resources to
enhance your family's history and advanced search techniques to help
maximize your results from online databases including census records,
passenger lists, maps, and books.   RELIC's Tish Como will present this
program on Tuesday, September 28, at 7 p.m., in the Bull Run Library
community room.

MIGRATION ROUTES IN AMERICA BEFORE 1850 

Presented by Sharon Hodges

You know your family moved from one place to another in the United
States, you just don't know how or why. Understanding why your ancestors
may have left their home and moved to a new location and the routes
taken to get there, may lead to new information about those elusive
ancestors. 

Sharon Hodges is a professional genealogist, teacher and lecturer and
has been involved in genealogical research for over 20 years.  She will
present her talk at Bull Run Regional Library on Sunday, October 24, at
2 p.m.
