Book Talk at the Library of Virginia

Scientific Jefferson: Revealed
Tuesday, March 09, 2010
Time: Noon-1:00 PM
Place: Conference Rooms, FREE EVENT

Martin Clagett, Omohundro Scholar at the College of William and Mary and
Visiting Scholar to the James Wilson Programme at the University of St
Andrews, will discuss his book Scientific Jefferson Revealed.
Historians have often dismissed Jefferson as a 'dilettante dabbler in
gadgets and gizmoes.' However, Jefferson's Notes on the State of
Virginia, his collection of native vocabularies, the invention of the
Mould-Board Plow, the innovative process of stratification in
archaeological excavations, and the clever conception of the 'cypher
wheel', among other things, speak to Jefferson's status as a 'true
scientist'. Dr Clagett will address the connections between the
Scottish Enlightenment and Jefferson's scientific education and his
scientific contributions to the fields of agriculture, anthropology,
ethnology, comparative linguistics, paleontology, social architecture
and public health, and his role as a scientific spymaster.

The Library of Virginia is located at 800 East Broad Street in downtown
