Dear VA-Hist list members,

The Library of Virginia's noontime book-talk series continues on
Thursday, May 18, when Ivor Noel Hume will speak on his new Jamestown
novel, Civilized Men: A James Towne Tragedy.

Dr. Noel Hume is a pioneer in the field of historical archaeology in
America, shaping and guiding the program at the Colonial Williamsburg
Foundation for more than three decades begining in 1957. Noel Hume
captured the imaginations of both specialists and lay readers with his
many books, including Here Lies Virginia (Knopf, 1963), Historical
Archaeology (Knopf, 1969), Martin's Hundred (Knopf, 1982), and The
Virginia Adventure ( Knopf, 1994). In addition to many professional
honors and awards, he recieved the O.B.E. (Officer of the British
Empire) from Queen Elizabeth in 1992 for "services to British cultural
interests in Williamsburg, Virginia."

Now Noel Hume has written a fact-based novel that contrasts the familiar
and almost entirely fictional story of Pocahontas and John Smith with
the hitherto untold story of what happened in Virginia in 1610 between
the English and the Native Americans. By seeing the events through the
eyes of two young English brothers, the reader can take sides, following
one brother true to his English heritage and the other dying in defense
of the Indians' way of life. Civilized Men comes at a time when
national attention has begun to focus on Virginia because of the
commemoration of the 400th anniversary of the English settlement at
Jamestown in 2007. The book will no doubt spur debate about the meaning
of this event. The author has also written a prize-winning screenplay
based on the book.

Dr. Noel Hume's talk will be followed by a book signing sponsored by the
Virginia Shop, where copies of the book are now available.
