Executive Director, Virginia Center for the Book

The Library of Virginia is seeking a self-motivated, highly organized
professional to serve as Executive Director for the Virginia Center for the
Book, a State affiliate program of the Library of Congress. The Center
promotes books, reading, libraries, literacy and all aspects of print
culture.  The selected candidate will coordinate multiple projects and
programs including developing the Virginia Authors Room collection,
managing the annual Library of Virginia Literary Awards, planning for the
annual Awards Celebration and coordinating the Library’s participation in
Letters About Literature and the Virginia Festival of the Book. The
Executive Director, a new full time position, will plan and maintain
outreach activities, such as book signings, lectures, teleconferences, and
other public programs that benefit citizens living in all parts of the
Commonwealth.  By working closely with librarians, authors, and publishers,
and with the Virginia Library Association, the Virginia Foundation for the
Humanities and Public Policy, and similar educational organizations, this
person will arrange program partnerships for Center events/activities.
Important facets of this position include working with a board and board
development, writing promotional materials, fund-raising and creating
partnerships, grant writing, and presenting programs, such as author talks
and teacher workshops.

Qualifications: Degree in English, history, education, library science, or
a related field; master's degree preferred. Requires considerable
experience in developing programs and special events in partnership with
libraries, schools, museums, or similar educational organizations; fund
raising and administrative experience, preferably with non-profit
organizations; experience in working with boards and board development;
thorough knowledge of current trends in libraries, books and publishing;
working knowledge of American literature and history, with preference
toward the American South and Virginia; the ability to work independently
and with teams; to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; and
to plan and coordinate a variety of tasks simultaneously, with multiple
organizations and individuals.
