AHA!!!!!!! Just as I thought.  The next thing we will be told is that fifers
and drummers at the REAL Colonial Williamsburg did not actually get together
in a huge corps, but spent most of their time attached to, tootting and
drumming for the infantry companies or artillery batteries of which they
were members.  i.e. fifes and drums were FIELD MUSIC, as were their
follow-ons which were bugles, intended to be part of the command and control
system to relay orders, and not give concerts.

Hmmmmmm.  Another stake in the ground for "It never was 'like it was' "
???????
