Hello All,

Jim Watkinson and I have been having an offlist discussion of the method(s) of voting in Virginia in the Antebellum period. Jim has some important documents right in front of him and I have to concede that he has the best of the controversy. The one thing we do agree on is that we are not sure.
Thus, I bring the question to the list. Did Virginians vote viva voce (by voice) until 1867, when the Underwood Constitution was written and party originated paper ballots were adopted? Or, did this change take place sometime during the Antebellum era, perhaps when the new state constitution of 185? was adopted?
