Whenever I am researching historical geography, the first place I look
online is the Library of Congress's American Memory site's Map
Collection page.  It has an impressive collection of historical maps of
the US.  It is searchable and you can obtain detailed close-ups.  I
can't recommend it enough.  The URL is:
