Thanks, Paul and Joe Mc (hope I'm not overlooking anyone else) for
this suggestion. Your recommendations are enough to make me decide
to read The Killer Angels myself, which I will now do.

The nine-year-old in question, however, is a very bright and
perceptive young man who hasn't yet discovered that reading can be
exciting instead of a homework chore. The deal is this: if he wants
to go to Gettysburg this summer to watch the reenactment of the
battle with Aunt Jurretta--as he very much wants to do, having
recently developed a keen interest in historical wars--he is going to
have to learn more about the Civil War than he's been able to pick up
from TV shows and conversations with his nine-year-old buddies.
Which means he's going to have to do a little reading in advance.
Hence my question to the list.

Ongoing suggestions for CW materials, and particularly Gettysburg
materials, suited to a nine-year-old's reading still welcome. . . .
