I do not dispute that *some* Americans believed that their primary
loyalty was to their state and not the country as a whole. But, to
repeat myself, by 1860, the overwhelming majority of Americans,
including Virginians, were loyal to the United States and not to a
state.

There was, for instance, that other Son of Virginia, George H. Thomas,
to name only one.
