Dear DFM,
       Perhaps you should get a copy of the previously mentioned article in
the Virginia Magazine of History and Biography.  "TJ," as you put it, would
not have been cavalier in his choice of words.  It sounds like you think the
phrase refers literally to a wolf--"TJ" was refering to the insitution of
slavery.  Details make a difference in the world of historians, and this
detail does make a difference.
