The James Branch Cabell Library Associates and the VCU Libraries present
the Fifteenth Annual Cabell Lecture.

This year's speaker is Richmond's own Sheri Holman, author of _A Stolen
Tongue_ and _The Dress Lodger_. Ms. Holman will present the lecture,
"The Economy of Bodies: Dissecting History in the Novels of Sheri
Holman," at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, April 1, 2001 in the School of
Engineering Auditorium, 601 West Main Street, on the Academic Campus of
Virginia Commonwealth University.

This event is free and open to the public. A reception and book signing
will follow the lecture. Copies of her latest work, _The Dress Lodger_
will be available for purchase.

Ms. Holman's novels have dealt with the worth society assigns flesh and
bone --whether it is through prostitution, in the trafficking of saints'
relics, or in the securing of cadavers for early modern medical study.
She will describe her method of subjecting the historical record to
dissection and examination before assigning it a use, as her characters
do with the human body.

Ms. Holman will also talk about her next novel, _The Mammoth Cheese_,
which will be published in 2002. Set in contemporary Virginia, it
explores the grip history continues to have on a rural community as they
recreate (in 21st century America) the making of 1500 lb. cheese once
presented to Thomas Jefferson.

If special accommodations are needed, please call (804) 828-1108.
