I am not disputing the number of merchants but centered on "grocers"
wonder how many since people in many areas still grew their own?

I'm listening to a program on Public Radio about the financial panic of
1818. The William & Mary professor who is speaking says that there were
well over 200 merchant licenses in Richmond in 1818 (he gave the exact
number, but I didn't catch it).
