Phebe,
   Don't let that "subscription" screen stop you.  Signing up for an
on-line NY Times subscription is free.  Afterwards, the computer will
recognize you whenever you click on a NY Times link, and will not ask
for the subscriber name/password again unless you change computers.  You
can also subscribe to their daily e-mail updates (headlines, news
alerts, etc.).  - Rosanna
