I have been asked to share that   Virginia Silversmiths, Jewelers,
Watch- and Clockmakers, 1607-1860~ Lives and Marks has just been
published in December 2010. It is a hardcover book 8.5x11", 1100 pages,
with 1798 biographies, 933 photographs of marks by 324 silversmiths (
and others described), and 145 other illustrations. 

The biographies are heavily footnoted and illustrated with sufficient
images to keep the reading interesting. There are 855 pages of
biographies, 172 pages of endnotes, and 40 pages of bibliography with
unprecedented use of manuscript materials.


This is greatly expanded from Cutten's 1952 Silversmiths of Virginia
with activity of these artisans beyond Virginia, much Virginia history
and genealogy. Silver is discussed with each mark.  Images of silver and
related objects are not included in this volume (with a few small
exceptions); they were moved to Hollan's (MESDA publication forthcoming,
unscheduled) Virginia Silversmiths~the Branching of the Trade.
