The General Court during the colonial period consisted of the governor and
the members of the Governor's Council. There were usually about a dozen
members plus the governor.

In the spring of 1770 the members included Governor Botetourt, John Blair,
William Nelson, Thomas Nelson, Richard Corbin, William Byrd III, Philip
Ludwell Lee, John Tayloe, Robert Carter, Robert Burwell, John Page, George
William Fairfax, and James Horrocks. These names can be found easily in the
journals of the Council in its executive capacity (H. R. McIlwaine, et al.,
eds., EXECUTIVE JOURNALS OF THE COUNCIL OF COLONIAL VIRGINIA [6 vols.,
Richmond, 1925-1966]), published by the Virginia State Library.

Dumbauld's work on Thomas Jefferson as an attorney is good. So is the work
of Frank L. Dewey.

Subject: General Court in 1770

Can someone direct me to a source for the names of the judges of the
Virginia General
Court in April 1770? I would like to find out which judges heard the
case of HOWELL vs. NETHERLAND, argued by Jefferson and George Wythe.
Governor Botetourt
presided. Also, is anyone familiar with the legal writings of Edward
Dumbauld? Is his commentary on this case to be relied on?
With thanks,
Henry Wiencek
