The VMI cadets would be a great example. While there were some sons of the
wealthy who attended, there were many who were from more ordinary means.
Visit the VMI archives at www.vmi.edu/archives . There you can do a search
of alumni by name or by class (for example you can do a search of all cadets
in the class of 1850) ?and may be able to obtain your needed data there.

BTW, I am part of a small group of VMI alumni and friends who are trying to
find the graves of all of the cadets who fought in the battle of New Market.
You can see our efforts so far at www.picturetrail.com/vminewmarket , and
any assistance in finding the graves of the remaining cadets would be
greatly appreciated.

Dan,?

? Very good point. William Mahone attended VMI, probably on scholarship.
His father was an inn keeper in Jerusalem, Southampton County, Virginia.
Father Mahone may have owned a slave or two but he was hardly a planter.?

? I don't know the Antebellum period well but my research strategy would
be to concentrate on the military academies (federal and state), the
technical schools (i.e. Van Rensaeller Tech), and ministerial training
colleges. Each took talented (white) men regardless of background and
turned them into professionals and "gentlemen."?
