A general-reader friend asked me to recommend a book or two about the
colonial-era expansion of English settlement up the James.

Something that treats the rest of the colonial era like Charles E. Hatch's
The First Seventeen Years: Virginia, 1607-1624 would be perfect.  Nothing
quite right leaps to mind (and too many that do, boggle it).  Suggestions
anyone?
