I have a newspaper  from April 1850, the LYNCHBURG VIRGINIAN, published in
Lynchburg, Virginia.  Even as early as 1850, the debate over the union of the
states and state's rights was a topic for discussion.  The masthead of this
newspaper includes the phrase
"The Rights of the States, and the Union of the States".  While I realize that
the debate over state's rights was brewing way before the Civil War, I found it
very interesting when I saw the masthead.  It seems that the publishers of this
newspaper wanted their cake and they wanted to eat it too!
